About Me

My name is Matt Refghi, and I’m a software developer. I work primarily with VB6, VB .NET, ASP, JavaScript, PHP, and C#. My programming projects are not limited to my day job – I work on numerous side-projects at a time, though, mainly in PHP. You can read about one of these projects on my website.

When I’m not coding, I like to write…hence the existance of this blog. Outside the computer world, I like to do some rock climbing, hiking, and biking. I’m also a big fan of paintball. Oh… and I read, too – some of my favourite authors are Chuck Palahniuk, Robert Ludlum, and Clive Barker.

The Blogging Project

Types of Articles Posted

I tend to post three main types of articles, which include:

  • General technology posts
    • With these posts, I typically either cover an application or tool that I’ve learned to use, or I write about a general IT-related subject matter. There’s an emphasis on teaching here – I don’t see the point in talking about something that I feel is already widely known.
  • Problem-Solution posts
    • When I encounter software problems in my daily life, instead of just fixing each problem and continuing, I write a blog entry outling the problem, and my solution. I do this to help other people that are likely getting in the same situation. I’m particularly concerned about the quality of such posts, as they need to be especially clear. To improve the readability, I made use of a particular layout. I first start with the problem description, then I clearly indentify the solution, and I provide extra links under a “See Also” section. My use of the “See Also” section was inspired by Wikipedia.
  • Non-fiction posts
    • These posts are about my life, and they have one very important requirement. They have to be funny, or at least – amusing. If an article isn’t at least amusing, I won’t post it. I also will never post mundane details about what do in a given day. I think you all deserve having something more rewarding to read.
Copyright Messages

I’m very careful about respecting copyrights – I will only use an image on this site if I:

  • purchased the image, and have the rights to use it publicly.
  • took the screenshot.
  • have the right to use the image according to the image license.

In some cases, you’ll notice copyright watermarks on the images I include in my posts. I do this to make it harder for people to steal the images I’ve taken. In some cases, you’ll see this watermark in screenshots that depict the work of others – for example, an image might depict a website, or an application. My copyright message is strictly about the image I produced when I took the screenshot, in these cases – the content of the depicted sites, unless stated otherwise, is not mine, and so the rights belong to their respective authors.

If you are the owner of a particular image, and you feel I am using it improperly, please notify me as soon as possible. I will take the image down.

Advertising

To help offset the price of my web hosting, I might feature ads in the future. Regardless of which ads I will end up showing, rest assured: I will go to great lengths to ensure they are respectfully placed, and not too intrusive. If you feel a particular advertised product is inappropriate, please let me know. It is important to me that the products featured are respectable and relevant.

If you’d like to advertise on this blog, send me an e-mail at mref@gmail.com, and we’ll discuss the possibilities.

If you see Amazon recommendations, I want to clarify that they only feature books that I have read. Whenever an ad module is titled “Recommended” – it features books I personally read, and highly recommend.
